Dimensions

Low-strength ASTM A563 Grade A and SAE J995 coupling nuts are typically manufactured to standard hex nut dimensions across the flats and corners of the nut. The length will vary from slightly more than three diameters in smaller-diameter coupling nuts to slightly less than three diameters for larger sizes. High-strength A563 Grade DH and A194 Grade 2H coupling nuts measure three diameters in length. Note that some coupling nuts may be supplied in slightly larger hex sizes due to variances in commercially available hex bar from which most coupling nuts are produced.

Nonstandard coupling nuts can be manufactured to any ASTM or SAE nut specification and have different dimensional requirements.

Coupling nuts typically possess right-hand threads and can be threaded using Unified National Coarse, Unified National Fine, or 8 Unified National thread pitches. Unless otherwise specified, threads are produced with a class 2B tolerance. Threads can be either tapped through or tapped in from each end.

Sight holes can be added at the centerline of the coupling nuts to provide visual verification that the threaded components have been fully engaged.

See the Nut Compatibility Chart for marking requirements.

Heavy coupler dimensions are not defined by ASME 18.2.2. The width across the flats and corners match the dimensions of a heavy hex nut.

* 7/8″ Galvanized Couplers are 3″ long.
